On July 28, 1998, an unique environmental policy forum marked the establishment of GIN-Asia--the newest office in the now worldwide Greening of Industry Network. The policy forum brought together senior industrial policy makers from around the globe to discuss economic development and environmental sustainability. This issue is particularly relevant in Asia, where the economic crisis has forced a serious re-thinking of traditional economic development and business strategies. Fortunately, the key elements of this re-thinking--greater attention to efficiency, transparency, and accountability--are also fundamental elements of sustainable development.
