US-AEP contributes to CERF Symposium

US-AEP recently participated in the Civil Engineering Research Foundations (CERF) Symposium 2000, held in Washington, DC August 14-17. US-AEP Executive Director, Peter Kimm served as the keynote speaker for the environment session. In his speech, Mr. Kimm provided an overview of US-AEP and spoke on the opportunities to introduce innovative U.S. environmental technologies in Asia. Mr. Kimm stated, "economic growth and environmental management are compatible in Asia." He further added, "the transfer of innovative technologies to Asia is going to be a key factor in ensuring Asias long-term sustainable growth and the opportunities for U.S. companies to participate in this long-term sustainable growth are tremendous."

Collaborating with ASEAN on technology verification

The World Federation of Technical Assessment Organizations (WFTAO) held its annual global meeting in conjunction with the CERF-sponsored Symposium. As part of an agreement with ASEAN, US-AEP sponsored Mr. Kesrat Sukasem, Senior Environmental Officer from ASEAN to participate in the WFTAO and CERF meetings. Mr. Sukasems objective was to become familiar with various models of environmental technology verification. Based on Mr. Sukasems meeting with WFTAO and other organizations in the U.S., US-AEP and ASEAN will develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for collaboration to establish a center or network for environmental technology verification in ASEAN.

Asian Mayors meet to fight urban poverty

Approximately 70 mayors and city leaders from the Asia and Pacific region met at the Asian Mayors Forum on Fighting Urban Poverty, held June 26-29, in Shanghai, China. The Asian Development Bank

sponsored the event with US-AEP, the United Nations Development Program, the United States Agency for International Development, and CITYNET co-sponsoring.

Rapid growth in Asia has exacerbated problems affecting the urban poverty, such as unemployment, inadequate housing, poor environmental and unsanitary living conditions. The forum gave leaders representing these urban areas an opportunity to share information about practices that can improve the lives of urban inhabitants, as well as solutions that address the effects of rapid growth.

US-AEP sponsored the attendance of three mayors, two from the Philippines and one from Indonesia. US-AEP's Commercial Environmental Specialist to the ADB, Stacy Bonnaffons, served as a moderator for the session on "Urban Waste Management." Mayor Ortega of San Fernando, Philippines praised the assistance provided by US-AEP in the area of waste management. US-AEP Urban Infrastructure Representative in India, Mr. P.U. Asnani, moderated the session on "Slum Improvement" and promoted the advantages of a City Managers' Association during a special networking session.

This year's forum produced tangible benefits, including a plan by ADB and CITYNET to promote electronic networking among city leaders to continue sharing experiences and best practices. Next year's Asian Mayors forum will focus on health and education.

Philippine delegation learn about air quality management

US-AEP/Philippines Technology Representative Dr. Alma Madrazo led a 20-member delegation of Philippine government and corporate officials on a study tour that addressed air pollution issues. The delegation included Filipino Congressman J.R. Nereus Acosta who is the author of the Philippine Clean Air Act.

The study tour started with the 93rd Air and Waste Management Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. After the A&WMA conference, the delegation went to San Diego, California where they visited Advanced Pollution Instrumentation, Inc. and the San Diego Air Pollution Control District. They attended courses on "The U.S. Permitting System" and "Continuous Emissions and Air Quality Monitoring Systems." Congressman Acosta commented, "The US-AEP trip to Utah and San Diego gave me a far keener appreciation of the problems and possibilities related to air quality management. The sharing of cross-cutting experiences and expertise on the part of industry and policy initiatives is very valuable."
