US-AEP
supports landmark conference on renewable energy technologies in Chennai.
The First
Millennium International Conference and Exhibition on Renewable Energy
Technologies, considered to be a groundbreaking event in India, was held
February 9-11, 2000, at the Indian Institute of Technology (ITT) in Chennai.
US-AEP co-sponsored
this high-profile conference and exhibition, which attracted more than 200
participants, 15 exhibiting companies, and dozens of expert speakers. US-AEPs
Environmental Exchange Program sponsored Mr. William Guiney, an instructor
at the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), University of Central Florida,
who shared his expertise on the topic of "Global Outlook for Renewable
Energy Technologies."
Mr. Sundaresan
Subramanian, Director of US-AEP/Chennai, also spoke at the conference.
According to him, the event provided an excellent opportunity for US-AEP to
explain its role in the climate change initiative and how it can help in
accelerating energy- and environment-related projects. Mr. Subramanian, who
later met with U.S. firms and potential buyers of solar and renewable energy
technologies, went on to say, The US-AEP presentation made such an impact
that over a dozen trade inquiries were received immediately after the
presentation.
The conference was
organized by the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai; M. S. Swaminathan
Research Foundation, Chennai; and the Madurai Kamaraj University.
US-AEP/CTEM
holds pre-peer assessments in Korea and Taiwan.
As part of an effort to
assist Asian national accreditation bodies in achieving international
recognition of ISO 14001 schemes, US-AEPs Clean Technology and
Environmental Management (CTEM) program held two pre-peer assessments in
Korea and Taiwan R.O.C. from January 10-21, 2000. These evaluation meetings
were a follow-up to the March 1999 conference in Tapei, Taiwan.
The assessments of
the Chinese National Accreditation Board (CNAB) and of the Korea
Accreditation Board (KAB) entailed a rapid review of each organization's
accreditation systems. Both boards received advice on how to resolve
deficiencies, in preparation for a formal peer evaluation with the
International Accreditation Forum (IAF).
Mr. Michael Ross,
Chief Executive Officer, American Council of Accreditors (ACA), and Mr. Chin
Miew Lim, Director, Accreditation Division, Department of Standards Malaysia
(DSM), facilitated the assessments.
Observing the
evaluation process were representatives from the Quality Council of India (QCI),
Philippines Bureau of Products and Standards (BPS), Thai Industrial
Standards Institute (TISI), Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS),
Indonesian National Standardization Agency, and the Singapore Accreditation
Council (SAC). In the coming months, these accreditation bodies will be
revising their own country action plans and preparing for IAF audits.

Calcutta
Metro announces plans to incorporate EMS
The Environmental
Management System (EMS) for Transit Systems Workshop was held in Calcutta,
India, on January 31 and February 1, 2000.
This workshop, sponsored by the Urban Programs of US-AEP and led by Julie
Haines, Managing Director of CTEM/Urban Programs, showcased the New York
City Transit Authoritys (NYCTA) experience in creating an EMS program. It
also detailed the necessary steps required to establish an EMS for the urban
transit and rail systems in India.
In addition to the
Calcutta Metro, representatives from the Eastern and SouthEastern Divisions
of the Indian Railway Authority as well as municipal managers from Ahmedabad
were present. Immediately following the two-day workshop, the Calcutta Metro
agreed to incorporate an EMS within its Engineering Division as well as a
fixed facility such as one of their car sheds.
According
to Michael Kornell, Manager of Urban Programs, selected workshop
participants will visit New York City this summer to take part in weeklong
field workshops. These workshops will offer hands-on training with the New
York transit managers who created the EMS for the NYCTA. Six to eight months
thereafter, a two-person team of NYCTA officials will visit the Indian
transit sites to fine-tune the implementation of the EMS program.

Staff News:
It is with well wishes that we say farewell to two
US-AEP Tech Reps who have served continuously since 1993. Mr. Chi-Sun Lee
and Ms. Jennifer Huang will be leaving the program in March.
Chi-Sun Lee
has served as Director of US-AEP/Korea for over seven years. In the US-AEP
family, he has been respectfully known as the Dean of the Tech Reps. Under
his tenure, the Korea office was about technology transfer and no one has
had a more successful track record than Chi-Sun Lee. Chi-Sun has generated
over $180,000,000 in sales for U.S. companies and produced over 1,100 trade
leads. Chi-Suns contribution to the US-AEP family is significant and he
will be sorely missed.
Jennifer Huang, who started as an Administrative Assistant in the Taiwan
office, quickly rose to the rank of Deputy Director. One of her many
successes was coordinating efforts in Taiwan to establish the Environmental
Center for Livestock Waste Management, which opened last December. Jennifer
will be leaving the program on March 22. |
