Asian
Mayors' Forum held in Sri Lanka.
City officials from ten countries converged in
Colombo, Sri Lanka, last week to participate in the first Asian Mayors
Forum. This forum enabled the 75 participants to exchange ideas on improving
municipal services in their home countries, which included China, India,
Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and
Vietnam. The event was sponsored by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the
ADB Institute (Toyko), while US-AEPs Urban Unit and Office of Technology
Cooperation in Sri Lanka were among the cosponsors. The participants
discussed several possible areas of future collaboration, including
establishment of sister cities, public-private partnerships with
nongovernmental organizations, exchanges, and technology transfer
activities. US-AEP was represented by P.U. Asnani, Urban Environmental
Infrastructure Representative in India, and Ananda Mallawatantri, Technology

Mayors Forum is planned. For more information on the event, visit the ADB

Virtual
Trade Show kiosk unveiled in Korea.
The U.S. Department of Commerces Commercial
Service, along with US-AEPs Office of Technology Cooperation in Korea,
recently unveiled the Virtual Trade Showa mobile, touch-screen kiosk that
promotes U.S. environmental companies. By displaying a directory of U.S.
companies and presenting technical product information in both Korean and
English, the kiosk serves to link potential business partners. The Virtual
Trade Show was first used during ENVEX 99, the International Exhibition on
Environmental Technologies, held mid-June in Seoul, Korea. ENVEX 99
featured 132 companies from 13 countries and attracted more than 6,500
visitors, including representatives of Koreas largest firms and officials
from the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and
Energy. US-AEP/Korea organized the U.S. Pavilion at the conference, where
participating U.S. firms garnered almost 900 trade leads. An additional 300
leads were obtained by companies represented on the kiosk. The Virtual Trade
Show will be used at events throughout Korea and be incorporated into the
Commercial Services website,
