Experts approve of proposed
Taiwan livestock waste management center.
University and industry swine waste management experts met in Chicago,
March 18-19, to discuss establishing a livestock waste management center in
southern Taiwan. Leading U.S. researchers, including Dr. Frank Humenik of
North Carolina State University, Dr. Ronald Miner of Oregon State
University, Dr. Krishna Pagilla of the Illinois Institute of Technology, and
Dr. Po-Yung Lai and Dr. Ming-Pi Mi of the University of Hawaii, met with
officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Equipment
Manufacturers Institute (EMI), and US-AEP/Washington to hear details of the
proposed center. University and industry representatives will meet again in
late April at the National Pingtung Polytechnic Institute (NPPI) in Taiwan,
home of the proposed center, for a three-day swine waste management
symposium. The center is expected to have a positive impact on Taiwan's 12
million head pork industry where the largest farm produces 160,000 head
annually.
California company markets
gasoline detergent in India.
Petroleum Chemicals Company (PCC), sponsored by the California Trade and
Commerce Agency, received a US-AEP
Environmental Technology
Fund grant to create and expand the market presence for the company's
detergent additives for bulk treatment of gasoline. In an effort to target
oil refineries in several regions in India, PCC, with the help of Amtech
India, is organizing an India National Expo in New Delhi. The company's
additive has been especially designed for the Indian market and uses a
low-cost production process. US-AEP's Environmental Technology Fund is
managed by the National Association of
State Development Agencies.
Louisiana environmental trade
mission to Indonesia.
In April 1996, the Louisiana Department of Economic Development launched
an environmental trade mission to Jakarta and Surabaya, Indonesia, as part
of its activities under a US-AEP
State Environmental Initiative
grant, a program jointly sponsored by US-AEP and Council of State
Governments (CSG). As a result, Royce Instruments Corp. sold $25,000 of
wastewater monitoring equipment, and to increase sales, hired and trained an
Indonesian sales representative. USTest Inc. profited from a $15,000 sale
and is now evaluating several Indonesian companies as potential
distributors. Basky Systems Inc. has been in discussions with the Indonesian
government to sell mobile environmental testing labs for use in monitoring
ground water, air, and soil contamination. The potential sale of Basky's
equipment and services would be between $10- 15 million. For RPM
Engineering, negotiations with Indonesian oil, gas, and petrochemical
companies could result in RPM providing $500,000 to $1 million in
environmental engineering services. Other mission participants in
negotiations with Indonesian partners include Nutrilicious Food Products,
Ares International, Ltd., and Inabata America Apollo Services.
Taiwan seminar focuses on
environmental technology issues.
US-AEP/Taiwan and the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (TEPA)
jointly sponsored a seminar during Taiwan's environmental technology
conference, Enprotech '97, February 26-27. More than 100 officials from
Taiwan's environmental associations, industry, and government participated
in the two-day event. Discussions focused on such issues as environmental
technology certification, regulatory sys-tems, best practices, pollution
prevention technologies, and voluntary programs. Panelists leading the
discussions included representatives from the California Environmental
Protection Agency, U.S. Army Environmental Center, Regional Institute of
Environmental Technology, and several private firms.
Hong Kong seminar presents U.S.
experience with energy labeling.
US-AEP/Hong Kong played a critical role in the success of a
one-day seminar, 'Energy Labeling for Home Appliances,' held in Hong Kong
March 6, by identifying potential speakers from the U.S. and acting as an
intermediary. The seminar, sponsored by the UN Economic and Social
Commission for Asia, addressed how international experience could affect
Hong Kong's voluntary energy labeling scheme. Terry Kraft-Oliver, Managing
Director of the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC)
presented lessons learned from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
Energy Star and energy labeling schemes. More than 300 professionals from
business, government, and academia attended the seminar. US-AEP was
represented by the attendance of Todd Avery, Director of US- AEP/Hong Kong
and Albert Leung, Deputy Director.
CTEM Information Center requests.
Last month, US-AEP's Clean Technology and Environmental Management (CTEM)
Information Center in Washington responded to several requests from US-AEP
Technology and Environmental Infrastructure Representatives, USAID/US-AEP,
and staff. US-AEP/Korea requested help in obtaining photographs of
environmental disasters for an exhibition hosted by the Korea Environmental
Preservation Association. Kerith McFadden responded by introducing them to
Earthbase, a non-profit organization which collects environmental disaster
photographs, and creating a HTML document with links to various photos on
Earthbase's Internet web site. In early March, Kerith created a Textile
Information Packet, the first in a series of information packets on CTEM-focus
industries, and distributed it to US-AEP Tech Reps.
Philippines catalogue show
features 140 U.S. companies.
US-AEP/Philippines hosted a successful catalogue show in
Davao City in February during the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers
(PICHE) convention. Featured at the show were 140 U.S. environmental
companies specializing in the solid waste, water and wastewater treatment,
air pollution, and toxic and hazardous wastes sectors.
