U.S. and Asian Environmental Experts Confer on Industrial
Hazardous Waste Management
The
United States - Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP) and the
Institute of International Education (IIE) will host a study tour, March
6 - 10, on industrial hazardous waste policy and management for
government officials and industry representatives from seven Asian
nations. The week-long visit begins with a panel discussion on Monday
in Washington DC, and follows with visits Tuesday through Friday to U.S.
electronic and chemical industries in Maryland and New Jersey that have
been successful in managing hazardous waste.
U.S.
experience can be selectively adapted to enhance industrial hazardous
waste management in Asia. This study tour covers three main areas, in
order to effectively present lessons learned from the U.S. policy
experience and viable management strategies for Asian decision-makers to
consider. First, U.S. government, industrial and nongovernment (NGO)
leaders present their perspectives on lessons learned from U.S.
industrial hazardous waste policy. Second, participants examine
appropriate government and private sector policies for industrial
hazardous waste management. Lastly, site visits to selected industries
-- electronics and chemicals -- provide successful case studies of
industrial hazardous waste management.
Speakers at the panel represent the U.S. House of
Representatives Commerce Committee, Resources for the Future, Intel, PPG
Industries, Safety-Kleen and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA). The objective of this panel presentation is to present and to
discuss U.S. lessons learned with representatives from India, Malaysia,
Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Vietnam. The Monday
afternoon session will be reserved for country presentations. It is
open to the public.
On Tuesday, the
group will visit Clean Harbors of Baltimore, Inc., and the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection. They will remain in New Jersey
through Friday visiting the Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Lucent Technologies,
Marisol, Safety Kleen corporations, and the New Jersey Institute of
Technology as relevant case studies.
The
Institute of International Education, a core contractor of the US-AEP,
designs and implements environmental business exchanges between Asia and
the U.S. Launched as a Presidential initiative in 1992, the US-AEP is a
public-private initiative that promotes environmentally sustainable
development in Asia. US-AEP is jointly implemented by several U.S.
government agencies, under the leadership of the U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID). In creating US-AEP, the White House
recognized Asias growing commitment to sustainable development and
Americas increasing eagerness to share its experience, technology, and
management practices. For more information, please visit
