CSG
Awards Grant to North Carolina to Initiate Environmental Partnership in
Vietnam
LEXINGTON, KY, April 15, 1999
North Carolina was selected as one of four states to receive a grant
in 1999 from The Council of State Governments State Environmental
Initiative. States use the grants to match environmental technologies
and state regulatory and environmental expertise with Asian interests to
design environmental solutions.
Established in 1994, the State Environmental
Initiative is administered by the Environmental Policy Group with CSGs
Center for Leadership, Innovation and Policy for the United States-Asia
Environmental Partnership to promote a clean revolution in Asia.
The University of North Carolinas Frank
Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise will link North Carolina
and other U.S. environmental technology suppliers to Vietnam and address
financing constraints that prevent the rapid development of water supply
systems in that country. Representing CSGs first SEI project in Vietnam
with a grant of $149,914, the North Carolina-Vietnam Environmental Trade
and Technologies initiative will facilitate the commercialization of
existing and new water companies. Through collaboration with Thai
organizations, the initiative will also support Vietnams efforts to
become more fully integrated into the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations and the international business community.
Other project partners include the North
Carolina Alliance for Competitive Technologies, Citibank International
Fellows Program, Kenan Institute Asia, and the Vietnam Chamber of
Commerce and Industry. The project partners are matching the CSG award
with $150,800.
Sponsored by the United States Agency for
International Development, the United States-Asia Environmental
Partnership mobilizes U.S. environmental experience, technology and
practice to promote the development and adoption of less-polluting and
more-resource-efficient products, processes and services in the
Asia/Pacific region. CSGs Center for Leadership, Innovation and Policy
promotes policy development, leadership training and innovative state
programming. The 1999 state grant recipients are California, Hawaii,
North Carolina and Tennessee. These states matched their grants with a
total of $966,898 in cash and/or in-kind services.
The Council of State Governments is a
nonpartisan, multibranch organization of the states and U.S. territories
that champion excellence in state government and works with state
leaders across the nation and through its regions to put the best ideas
and solutions into practice. CSG conducts research, maintains a national
information clearinghouse, produces numerous leading publications,
showcases innovative state programs, promotes federal-state partnerships
and conducts leadership development programs.
