CEBU CITY--The Clean Technology and Environmental Management program of the United States-Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP/CTEM) is supporting a Train-the-Trainer Workshop on the Principles of Pollution Prevention on April 14-16 at the facility of the United Tech Automotive, MEPZ 1 in Lapulapu City, Cebu, according to Conchita Silva, program manager-Asia, US-AEP/CTEM.

This workshop is the second of a series and implemented in partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The objective of the workshop is to provide general background information and materials needed to teach an introductory pollution prevention course.

It is intended as a train-the-trainer workshop for individuals who are responsible for providing environmental related training that focuses on pollution prevention/cleaner production concepts.

This activity is in support of CTEM's strategy to develop extension organizations in the Philippines that offer expertise to industry. One of the leading extension organizations that US-AEP is currently working with is PCAPI (Pollution Control Association of the Philippines).

The first module of the workshop was held in December 1998 with 20 core individuals as participants from PCAPI and TLRC (Technology Livelihood Resource Center). The core group is expected to be able to facilitate that learning in others, as such they will ask to co-teach with trainers from the U.S. EPA during the second module, on April 14-16.

The first group will train a new group of participants from United Tech Automotive and its suppliers, Fujitsu Ten Corporation.

A facility walk through will also be carried out during the second day.

Messrs. Peter Kimm, Executive Director, US-AEP, and Dennis Zvinakis, Regional Representative, US-AEP, will attend the opening (10:00 AM) of the workshop on April 14.

Another activity that Peter will attend is a signing ceremony with Mayor Alvin Garcia. This is in regard to an activity called Climate Action Project with Cebu City. The project provides operational framework to address local air pollution and green gas emissions through a participatory and transparent planning process at the local level. It embodies the concept of empowering local governments to deal with environmental issues.
